Many of us have been told that we can achieve anything we want.
That we can become whatever we want to be.
We have been told that nothing can defeat us.
I am certain that I am not alone, you have also heard these words. These are words of encouragement and hope. However, it takes more than statements to reach the life you want. Where I grew up, we have always been told that God helps those who help themselves.
I have learned through my own journey that these words are true but within context. The only challenge with these statements is if they are not put into context, it would sound like prosperity gospel encouraging people to pray their way to success.
You need to go beyond words and slogans if you were to reach your goals and become successful in what you do.
Let me share these few tips:
- Self-belief: No matter how many times these words are screamed, whispered or shouted; nothing will move you unless you develop self-belief. If you see your situation to be above you, you will continue to be paralyzed by fear and self-doubt. Henry Ford was right when he said, “whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right”.
- Goals: Goals help you to focus on the desired end state. Even when you are told or believe that you can become what you want to, you should be crystal clear about what the end state should look like for you. If you were to cast your eyes three years from now, what would you like to have achieved? Answer this question, it will help you focus on the right things.
- Action: Tony Robbins was right when he said that “you see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action”. Goals without action are not worth the paper they are written on.
- Hard work: Action should be supported by hard work. It is a given that you get what you work hard for and not what you wish for. Nobody has ever died because of working hard.
Words are important because they can give you a head start. You need inspiration and encouragement coming from books and speeches. Everyone can boast with words; however, it takes determination and hard work to change your situation and become what you want to be through concerted action and hard work.
