These words by Stephen Covey ring true than ever especially during this festive period. We are at the tail-end of the year 2019. To be exact, we are left with 17 days to the end of the year. How you finish the race is important, you cannot leave this part of your life to chance.
This reminds me of the commonly reported statistics that most vehicle accidents happen at least 9 kilometers away from the destination. This is because most car drivers think they have all things under control because their destination is on the horizon. It is at this point that they hand over control to complacency and they crash.
This is a period of festivities, and almost everyone is happy and merry. It is important to have fun and rejoice, however, it is also easy to lose focus and be lost into the festive buzz. You cannot afford to be the driver who loses control 5 minutes away from their destination.
Here are a few things I suggest you should prioritize in the midst of the celebrations and focus on the first things first!
– Goals: Take stock of how you have performed against your goals during the year. What has worked, what did not work and where your focus should be going forward.
– You: You are the most important ingredient in your success equation. Take care of your nutrition and the amount of sleep you have. Slip in a book or two that you have always wanted to get through.
– Relationships: Nurture the important relationships in your life. Your family is the glass ball that Bryan Dyson, the former CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. spoke about in his famous “five balls” speech. If it falls, it breaks, gets shuttered and cannot bounce back.
– Finances: This is the most important season to give your finances leadership and not allow circumstances to dictate what happens to your hard-earned cash. It is not time to impress your friends with less important things while your family and important goals suffer.
We are not victims of our circumstances; we are designers of our own lives. Designing the life you deserve starts by not leaving anything to chance. You need to be deliberate about your life. Make sure that the main thing remains the main thing.
