You cannot achieve much in life until you push yourself to the limits and you will never know those limits until you put yourself to the test. In most cases, the limits you have to push are internal blocks and limitations that will continue to exist until you decide to do something that you have not done before.
There is not going to be a magical day when you wake up and suddenly find that all things you dreamed of are fulfilled without you taking action.
There will never be a moment when all things you feared are going to evaporate into thin air without you having to face them head-on.
The writer and mountain climber James Ullman has wonderful words that you need to ponder when he said “challenge is the core and mainspring of human action. If there’s an ocean, we cross it. If there’s a disease, we cure it. If there’s a wrong, we right it. If there’s a record, we break it. And if there’s a mountain, we climb it”.
You need to permit yourself to identify the oceans you have to cross to reach your dreams. Face the person in the mirror and find a cure for the diseases that are eating away at you. These may be diseases of envy, jealousy, self-doubt, blaming, self-pity, shame, guilt. Find any disease inside of you and cut it from spreading.
If there’s a record to break, name it and break it. That record is not waiting for anyone but you. Permit yourself to be the first in your family to break that generational curse and establish the new record that will turn around the fortunes of those you love.
Your dreams, aspirations and aims will not manifest until you conquer the mountain that you are. The New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist Edmund Hillary once said that “it is not the mountain we need to conquer, but ourselves”. Once you conquer yourself, you give yourself permission to be, do more and create more.
In most cases, you do not conquer yourself because you think that you are the only person who has challenges and admitting that would be a sign of weakness. You are afraid to ask for help because you look at other people and you believe that they have it all together. You then go around pretending that you have it all together so that you can hide your supposed weakness. You pretend that you have everything under control.
Crossing the oceans, creating new records, and conquering mountains do not come from the mindset of pretence. You have to be real and acknowledge your fears and limiting beliefs so that you can do something about them.
In the words of Dr Steve Maraboli, “don’t look for society to give you permission to be yourself”.
We all have fears and those who make it in life are those who face their circumstances head-on. Unfortunately, you cannot solve your challenges by shying away from them. You cannot run away from that illustrious careers forever. You cannot wish for the achievement of personal goals forever. You have to step up and act.
I was humbled when one of my coaching clients said: “I wish I could have taken this opportunity earlier. I allowed fear to trip me. Now that I know better, I will advise others to grab the opportunity with you and change their lives for the better”.
