Procrastination Extinguishes The Fire Within (The Reason You're Going Nowhere Fast)

Posted by

The festive period is the opportune moment to meet family and friends.  These interactions are usually characterised by catching up on life and on progress achieved.

I bet that without fail, most of the people I talk to always talk about how life in the new year should be better than the preceding year.

The more I hear this, the more I see life remaining the same for them. Not because I wish that to happen, but because of the language they use.

In these discussions, I hear the fastest and quickest way people defer their dreams when they say:

  • There’s still tomorrow
  • There is no rush is South Africa
  • You take life too seriously, please walk slow

How can you state that you desire something, but say and do the exact opposite of that?

I always ask the question, “why not face it now and get it over with?”

Some say, “it is just the way I am”.

For many of us, we have a basic psychological preference to focus on what is less important and procrastinate what is more important. Procrastination is the act of putting off something until a future time.

Unfortunately, some are chronic procrastinators whose dreams do not see the light of day because of fear. This could be fear of failure, fear of success or low frustration tolerance.

Do or die

Psychologists talk about procrastinating as a phenomenon of what is called self-handicapping. This is the “deliberate creation of conditions by which failure can be attributed to courses outside the person’s control”

People go to the extend of blaming the weather for their failure to do anything.

My friend, you will never plant a seed waiting for the wind to calm. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Chronic procrastination (active procrastination is good – topic for another day) is bad and it has the potential to:

  • Arouse emotions of guilt, stress and depression
  • Makes you feel inadequate
  • Totally destroys dreams

” Whatever form of procrastination comes in, learn to identify it, root it out, and kick it out” – Jim Howard

Take a moment and imagine your life over an extended period of time and ask yourself these questions:

  •  How does your life look like in the next 3 years because you failed to take action?
  •  What is the picture like in the next 10 years?
  • How does a lifetime of missed opportunities make you feel?

Revisit my previous post and Blaze A Path To The Future You Deserve by doing something about it NOW.

Don’t let these principles become meaningless and just another read. Take massive action today.
