I was driving with my nephew the other day telling him that I want to buy a small car. At that moment, the Volkswagen UP pulled through and I was excited to show him the car I was referring to. He immediately turned around my plans and gave me a list of German SUV’s that would suit me. He told me that it will show my success and that people will envy me for driving the latest BMW X6 or Mercedes G63 instead of the small VW UP.
I don’t know why he thought I could afford these cars but be that as it may, I took the opportunity to educate but the target missed. I guess maybe it’s a matter of time as he is still young, but I believe that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Please don’t get me wrong, it’s not always about age because even older people don’t get it that you should not buy things you cannot afford just to please others.
You must make decisions that you feel most comfortable with and not what society defines as success. In most cases, people who define success for you do not even have the things they want you to commit to. They will fulfil their own wishes and dreams through you. For some reason, the world seems to have colluded around the definition of success as accumulation of stuff and keeping up with the Joneses who cannot keep up with themselves in the first place.
Yes, I will be the first to admit that success is relative. Each one of us has their own definition of success. For me, I experience success when “I use my life journey experiences to cultivate personal mastery and self-worth in individuals and leaders around the world”. I feel fulfilled even when a single person out of a hundred tells me that my blog article or my speech has changed the trajectory of their life.
The challenge with many of us is to think that finances and what they can buy define success. I know bills need to be paid and promptly so. I also believe that it is not always about money. There is more to life than money. Accentuating one area of your life and focusing only on it leads to problems in other areas. Success is a 360° experience that demands a balancing act of all areas of your life that are important to you.
TD Jakes stated it well when he said that “the singular quest to attain a high level of success is often the reason many people forget to place the same emphasis on what is in their soul and heart”
